CMC Forums Registration and Instructions
These instructions are to help people new to the world of forums. There is lots of explanation just so you know whats going on. The text in bold are the only real instructions.
Make sure that "cookies" are turned on. (If you don't know what this means then they are probably turned on).
To register for the discussion groups so that you can post new messages or replies:

The top line "Verification Code" is there to help prevent spam sites from automatically creating accounts in the forums. Just type in the number you see on the right:

Fill in only the top 3 items:

Username. Although you can create an anonymous looking name, for CMC use it's probably better to choose a name or nickname that CMC members will know as you. The purpose of the forums is to exchange information with each other that usually implies a personal interest in the topic. If it is necessary to remain "anonymous" then you can register another account with a pretend name. Note that being absolutely anonymous on the Internet is very hard to achieve. If someone really want's to find out who you are they can probably do it with the right tools and a little detective work.
Email Address. You do have to put a real email address in here so that you can get your account confirmation and initial password. You can use your normal email if you want, but it is best to check the "No" box below where it asks: "Allow others to see your e-mail". If your email address has already been published on the internet, then it is OK to say "Yes". If your email has appeared in the CMC newsletters then it has been published on the Internet already, so checking "Yes" is OK. That email address probably already gets a lot of spam, so letting people see the address on the forums probably won't hurt anything. In the case of hike leaders, their email address has been in the e-news so they are probably on spam mailing lists already. It may be better to use an email that you use specifically in situations where spam might be a problem. I use ccf108@gmail.com for the newsletters and other publicly visible places. I get about 500 spams per month at that address, but gmail.com has a very good spam filter that catches about 98% of the spam and lets through 99.99% of the real messages.
Real Name. Similar explanation to #2. Eventually, if a human is controlling who becomes a member of the forums, a name known to the controlling human may be required
Time offset. Set the time to your local time. For eastern time zone folks it should already be correct. This time is used in time stamping posts and replies.
(The other items are optional and not used much by most people.)
Then click on Submit.
Then you will see:

Go to your email. You should have a message with your password in it.
Click on the link in the email or this one: http://www.carolinamtnclub.com/forums/logon.asp
then continue logging in:
You probably want to change your password. Once you are logged in look for "Control Panel" in the upper right corner and click on it or this: http://www.carolinamtnclub.com/forums/profile/controlpanel.asp You will see a place to change your password. On that page there are lots of other things about your profile that you could change. Unless you know of a specific reason to change something, leave them alone. If it looks confusing call Charlie.
To look at the discussion groups without registering or logging in:

Posting a new message:
Navigate to the Discussion Group that you want to post to. Near the top and bottom there is a button called "New Thread". Click on it and edit away. It's just like email.
Replying to a thread that is already there:
Click on the "Reply" button and type away. If you want the text in the message box, that you have been reading, and want the text to appear and be quoted in your reply, then click on "Quote" instead of "Reply". If there is lots of HTML code in the quoted text click on the "Rich Text Editor" button. If you want to be fancy in your posts, use the "Rich Text Editor".
